How to Delete Your Account
Permanently delete your ChoreSplit account and data from Settings
You can delete your ChoreSplit account yourself, from inside the app. It is permanent. There is no grace period and no way for us to bring an account back afterwards.
Before You Start
If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, cancel your subscription there first. Deleting your account does not cancel it. See Cancel a store subscription below. This is the one step people miss, and missing it means you keep getting charged for an app you can no longer sign in to.
If you subscribed on the web, you do not need to do anything. Deleting your account cancels that subscription immediately.
Deleting Your Account
-
Open Settings. Tap your profile picture in the top bar, then tap Settings.
-
Scroll to the bottom. The last section is Danger zone.
-
Tap "Delete account". A dialog opens and reads your account before it says anything, so what it lists is what will actually happen to your family, not a generic warning.
-
Read what it will remove. It names your family by name and tells you whether the family is being deleted or you are only leaving it.
-
Type your email address. The exact address you sign in with. Capitalisation does not matter. This is there so a mis-tap cannot delete an account.
-
Tap "Delete my account permanently". It happens straight away.
You are signed out and returned to the home page.
What Happens to Your Family
A family is shared, so deleting your account does not always delete the family.
You created the family and nobody else has their own login. The family goes with your account: every member you added, all the chores, assignments, points, streaks, rewards, photo verifications and history.
You joined someone else's family. Only you leave. Their chores, rewards and history stay, because they are not yours to delete. Comments you wrote stay on the tasks they belong to but stop showing your name, and your name comes off any chore that was assigned to you.
You created the family and other people have their own accounts in it. The app will not let you delete yet. It shows you who is still in the family and a button through to the family screen. Remove them there first, then come back. Deleting straight away would take their tasks and history with it, and there would be no way to give it back.
Cancel a Store Subscription
We cannot cancel a subscription that was bought through the App Store or Google Play. The store owns it, our server has no way to reach it, and it keeps renewing after your account is gone.
The app tells you this before you confirm and makes you tick a box to say you have read it. Do the cancellation as well.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Settings app
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Tap ChoreSplit, then Cancel Subscription
On Android:
- Open the Play Store app
- Tap your profile icon
- Tap Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions
- Tap ChoreSplit, then Cancel subscription
You can cancel before or after deleting the account. Do not skip it.
What Gets Deleted
- Your profile: name, email address, password, and any Google or Apple sign-in link
- Your family and everyone in it, if the family is being deleted
- Chores, assignments, completions, streaks, points and badges
- Rewards, reward goals, point balances, gift card redemptions and approvals
- Photo and video chore verifications
- Projects, project templates and share links
- Google Calendar access, so we stop reading and writing your calendar
- Notifications, push registrations, pending invitations and API keys
- Your entry on the email newsletter list
A small amount of information stays: payment records the payment providers are required to keep, app store receipts, and usage counts with the account details stripped out. The privacy policy covers what and for how long.
Troubleshooting
"Remove the other members first" You own a family that other people have their own accounts in. Go to Family, remove those members, then try again. There is no way to hand the family over to someone else.
Nothing happens when I type my email The Delete button stays off until the address matches the one on your account, and until the subscription checkbox is ticked if you have a store subscription. Check for a typo or a trailing space in a pasted address.
I want to keep my data but stop paying You do not have to delete your account to cancel. See How to Manage Your Subscription.
I deleted by mistake There is no recovery. Signing up again with the same email gives you a new, empty account.
