1. Introduction

Welcome to ChoreSplit. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our family task management service.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Name
  • Password (securely hashed)
  • Google account information (if you sign in with Google)

2.2 Usage Data

We collect information about how you use ChoreSplit:

  • Tasks created and completed
  • Family member information you add
  • Points and statistics
  • Task assignments and completion dates

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide and maintain the ChoreSplit service
  • Authenticate your account and ensure security
  • Track task completion and calculate points
  • Send you important service notifications
  • Improve and optimize our service
  • Respond to your support requests

4. Data Storage and Security

We store your data securely using industry-standard encryption. Your data is stored in secure cloud infrastructure with regular backups. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share your information only in the following circumstances:

  • With family members you invite to your family group
  • With service providers who help us operate our service
  • When required by law or to protect our rights
  • In connection with a business transfer or acquisition

  • Export your data
  • Object to processing of your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time

7. Cookies and Tracking

We use essential cookies to maintain your session and provide authentication. We also use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use our website. Google Analytics sets its own cookies and receives your IP address and basic device information.

We do not use advertising cookies, we do not run ad-network or social-media tracking pixels, and we do not sell or rent your information. We do not use analytics to build advertising profiles of you or your children.

8. Google User Data

ChoreSplit offers an optional Google Calendar integration. When you connect your Google account for this feature, we request access to the following Google API scopes:

  • calendar.events — used to create, update, and delete calendar events that correspond to tasks you schedule in ChoreSplit. Events are written to your calendar when a task is scheduled, updated when a task is rescheduled, and removed when a task is completed, deleted, or the integration is disconnected.
  • calendar.calendarlist.readonly — used solely to populate the calendar picker in integration settings, so you can choose which of your calendars receives task events. This scope reads the list of your calendars, not what is inside them.

How we use Google data: Google user data obtained through these scopes is used exclusively to provide the Google Calendar sync feature. Sending your ChoreSplit tasks out to your calendar happens in real time and stores nothing on our servers.

Importing events: Event import is a separate feature and it is off unless you turn it on. When it is on, the events from the calendar you pick are copied into your ChoreSplit account so they can sit alongside your chores. That copy includes each event's title, description, location and times, and it stays in your account until you turn import off, delete the item, or delete your account. Imported events are never sent to any AI feature.

Data retention: We store your Google OAuth tokens in our database, which our hosting provider encrypts at rest, for as long as the integration is connected. When you disconnect Google Calendar, your tokens are deleted immediately and all calendar events created by ChoreSplit are removed from your calendar.

Prohibited uses: We do not use Google user data for advertising, marketing, credit assessment, AI or machine learning model training, building user profiles, or reselling data. We do not transfer Google user data to any third party except as necessary to operate the calendar sync feature (e.g., authenticated API calls to Google's servers on your behalf).

ChoreSplit's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

9. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Children use ChoreSplit, so we built it so that a parent — never a child — creates the account and stays in control of the information in it. Account creation and management must be done by an adult (18 years or older). Parents are responsible for supervising their children's use of the service.

We have designed these practices to align with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). To be clear about what that means: we are not a member of a COPPA safe harbor program and we do not hold a COPPA certification or seal. "Aligned" describes the practices set out below, which we actually follow.

9.1 Children Do Not Sign Up — Parents Add Them

A child never creates their own ChoreSplit account. A parent adds each child to the family from inside the parent's account, and the child signs in with a username and password the parent sets. (A parent can also share a family invite link, but that link only works for someone who already has their own adult account — for example a co-parent.)

We do not ask a child for an email address, a phone number, or a home address, and we do not send email to children. Our system needs an internal identifier for each login, so for a child it generates a placeholder from their username. That placeholder is not a real mailbox and nothing is ever sent to it.

9.2 What We Store About a Child

Adding a child to a family requires one thing: a name. Nothing else is mandatory. Depending on what the parent chooses to fill in, a child's profile may contain:

  • The name or nickname the parent enters
  • A username and password the parent sets so the child can sign in
  • The child's age in whole years, only if a parent enters it. We do not ask for a date of birth.
  • A profile picture and a display color, if one is chosen
  • Their chores, completions, points, streaks, and achievements
  • An email address only in the case where a parent deliberately enters one for an older child who has their own. It is never required.

We do not collect a child's precise location, contacts, or identifiers for advertising. ChoreSplit has no public profiles, no public feed, and no open chat or friend system — a child only ever sees and interacts with members of their own family. We do not use children's information for targeted advertising, and we do not sell or rent it.

9.3 Chore Photos

If a parent turns on photo verification for a chore, a child can take or upload a photo to show the chore is done. Because this is a picture taken by a child, we want to be precise about what happens to it:

  • The photo is stored in our database. It is not placed at a public web address and it cannot be opened by someone outside your family — it is only returned to a signed-in member of your own family.
  • Members of your family can see it in the app, which is the point: it is how a parent checks the chore.
  • If AI photo verification is switched on for that chore, we send the photo to Google's Gemini API so the model can judge whether the chore looks done and write a short description of what it shows. A small number of previously approved photos for the same chore may be sent along with it as reference images. Google processes these images in order to return that result to us. We use a paid Google Cloud API tier, under which Google does not use the images we send to train its models.
  • AI photo verification is off unless it is enabled for a chore. If it is off, the photo is never sent to any AI provider.
  • Chore photos are not deleted automatically, and they are not removed on a schedule — they stay with your family's chore history until someone asks us to delete them. A parent can ask us to delete them at any time, as described in 9.4.

We do not use chore photos for advertising, and we do not sell them or publish them.

9.4 Parental Rights and Control

A parent or guardian with a ChoreSplit account can, at any time:

  • See everything we hold about their child, from inside the app
  • Correct or change any of it
  • Remove the child from the family, which deletes that child's profile
  • Ask us to delete their child's information — including chore photos — by emailing privacy@choresplit.com. We will not ask you for a reason.
  • Stop any further collection about the child by removing them from the family or closing the account

We do not require a child to hand over more information than is needed to take part, and we do not make a child's use of ChoreSplit conditional on giving us anything beyond a name.

9.5 Who Else Receives a Child's Information

We share children's information only with the providers we need in order to run ChoreSplit, and only so they can perform that work for us — our hosting and database provider, and the AI provider described in 9.3 when photo verification is used.

If your family uses ChoreSplit's gift-card reward option, we send our third-party fulfillment provider only the child's display name and the amount of the reward, so that the reward can be issued. We do not send that provider a child's email address, age, login details, contact information, or photos.

9.6 If a Child Signs Up Without a Parent

We do not knowingly allow anyone under 13 to create their own ChoreSplit account. If we learn that a child has done so without a parent, we will delete the account and the information in it. If you believe a child has given us information without a parent's involvement, email privacy@choresplit.com and we will remove it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
